A Statistical Study on Delivery Care in Rural of Korea


Abstract
Although the hospital delivery are desirable to reduce morbidity and mortality rates of both infant and mother, the rate of hospital delivery varies in socioeconomic and cultural back ground.
The lowered morbidity and mortality rates in more developed countries are undoubtedly associated with higher rates of better-equipped hospital care.
The author therefore decided to investigate the pattern of delivery of rural Korea which might be of value in presenting the problem as well as in seeking the solution.
164 wives aged between 20 and 49 were interviewed in Ka Dock Island, Kyung Sang Nam Do. The statistical analysis of 646 deliveries that were experienced by 164 wives were made and the following results were obtained;
1. 99.4% of 646 deliveries had been taken at home while the hospital delivery had been only 0.6%.
2. Recently there showed increasing tendency of hospital delivery.
3. Young mothers favoured their deliveries at their own parents¢¥ home.
4. In almost all cases (95.4%), the deliveries were attended by unqualified personals while only 3.7% were attended by physicians and 0.9% by midwives.
5. 6.1% of total had taken place without any assistance with the much higher incidence in higher-aged group.
6. 65.9% had not used anything underneath during labor and 22.6% used a sheet of vinyl, while 10.5% used only paper bag.
7. 84.8% of placentas were disposed of into the sea while only 13.3% incinerated.
Other mothers for the placental disposal were by burrying, by disposal into the sea after incineration, and by means of others in the order of frequency.
